Jul. 8th, 2008 03:51 pmto get this effect i tend to meter on the sky and lock it (AF lock). then reposition of composition and fire away..
its a great technique for getting good silouettes and keeping a very blue and sexy looking sky.
Glad people have found the tip helpful. The best way to meter for the sky is to put your camera in manual. Fill the frame with just sky, note the exposure settings then recompose. If you are using Auto, however, use spot metering mode, and as candleman said, lock your exposure on the sky and recompose.
Also the cows were on the other side of a panelled pen. So they look close - and they were - but they couldn't get to me. I think it gives a nice "intimate" quality to the shot. (Never thought I would use intimate to describe a picture of cows
)
Candleman - good tip with the silouettes. I've been trying to work on getting a really clean dark silouette, but I keep ending up happier with the subject a little brighter than black with a rim light. I think if I tried it against a pretty blue sky though, I might have better results.
